When you go to a Friday night dinner, what is on top of the halot?
What's on top of the bread at the table?
Right.
And the reason is because we make two big blessings at the table.
One is on the wine and one is on the bread.
And our tradition says, well, so why are we covering the bread?
And we say, well, we don't want the bread to feel bad that it gets the second blessing, that it doesn't get the first blessing.
And then the rabbis come and they say, really?
You really think that this inanimate object has any feelings?
Like, why are we worrying about the bread?
And the answer is, if children are raised in a home where they see that you're going so out of your way not to hurt the feelings of something that's an inanimate object, all the more so, are you going to be careful not to hurt the feelings of a person?
And here we have every rabbi, every scholar, every head of the community at this party watching Bar Kamsa being dragged, humiliated.
When we know we don't even do that to our bread and we're doing this to a person, what a complete failure.
And what it leads to is total destruction.
We have many different examples of tragedies that did happen on the 9th of Av and around this time of year.
There's this whole three week period before the 9th of Av is considered a period of mourning with more intense mourning in these nine days preceding the 9th of Av.
But we're not going to go into that right now.
But we also have very much modern day examples that didn't happen on this date, but that we use this date to remember.
Well, I think that it's important to remember that it's not in any way.
Please do not misunderstand.
