So it really started with a few lines in her voice and I expanded and expanded, expanded from there.

So I wrote my way into the story from her voice and imagining who she was and her life.

And then when I was about a third of the way in, I realized I needed to sit down and really plot out the book.

So it was

I started out as a pantser and I ended up becoming a plotter.

So, you know, sort of a blend between the two methods.

And I think that was really nice for me because I was able to figure out the kind of emotional heart of the book and who the characters were.

But then, you know, before I got too far into that, went back and layered on some structure on top of that.

It was a little bit of both.

I think my frustration with the Ellen character, as is probably the readers, is my frustrations with Cinderella, the trope in a lot of ways.

But I also have a lot of empathy for her character.

So I didn't want her to not have her own character arc or journey.

So that part was really intentional.

And where her character came from was I didn't want to be so obvious as if we're making the villain good.

that's an oversimplification but for the sake of conversation if we're making the villain good i didn't want to go and make cinderella bad you know that would just be too much like flipping yeah too much of a role reversal and a little too expected not very interesting i just got back from austria and germany on our family vacation and we had such an incredible time the mountains the people the food it was unforgettable i'm basically one giant pretzel now

me.

But I was thinking about what is Cinderella known for?

What does she represent to me?

And the first thing was passivity.
