So put the most simple way, um, a video game addiction is not present until the player has lost all control over their playing and it has begun to have a detrimental effect on all aspects of their life.
So this means playing games are negatively impacting their education, their work, their friendships, their physical health, their psychological well being for an extended period of time.
Now it's hard to give exact criteria for addiction because it's not actually formally recognized yet by the American Psychiatric Association.
It's um currently being treated as a condition that requires future research, more research to determine if it should be classified as an official disorder.
That being said, several criteria have been proposed, and these are largely based off of the diagnosis of a gambling.
Addiction, which is currently the only other behavioral addiction recognized by the APA.

So this are things like withdrawal symptoms, you know, tolerance, conflicts, their suffering, interpersonal, occupational, psychological consequences due to play.
And again, over a three to six month period.
So engagement, a lot of times parents say, Oh, my child played video games all of spring break.
Okay, well, what happened after spring break?
Oh well then they didn't have any more time to play and they went back to school and everything went back to normal.
Okay.
Well then they were just having a really fun two weeks.
Like you don't have to be too concerned.
It's more about losing control and having severe consequences due to their play.
Yeah, it's hard because games also with differently wired kids could especially be very socially reinforcing.
So it's not just about playing a game and having fun.
It's about playing the game with their friends.
