I think there are a lot of analysts who are saying, hey, you know, the yield curve does play a role in bank earnings, but it's really not the most important thing.
So basically, banks make money lending and, you know, they make money lending out money that they have taken from depositors.
It's essentially their business model.
And the question is, are they going to make less money because long-term rates are lower?
The answer is sort of, but not totally because...
A lot of their securities and loans don't price off of the long end of the yield curve.
So basically, loan growth kind of mysteriously slowed down around 2016, so right before the presidential election.
And bank executives gave one reason after another for it.
And despite that, it just really didn't come back.
It was flat or even down at some banks, which is for a business that's trying to make more money.
And the most basic way to do that is making more loans that you can make money off of.
It's a pretty bad thing.
Also bad because everyone was claiming the economy was doing so great.
Customers were so optimistic, but no one's taking out money.
Finally, that's come back.
Business borrowing has finally come back.
But we have all these other things that now are slowing down.
Commercial real estate lending is one of them.
Mortgages, especially refis, as rates go up, that's slowing down.
So, you know, there are a bunch of different things.
