And within two days of going home, after receiving his associated arts degree, I got an urgent message, actually from the Red Cross, that the police...
were looking for him.
He'd gotten word that they were on their way to interrogate him, because after all, he'd been in the United States for a couple of years, so he must be a spy.
That night, he packed his suitcase and walked out of Pakistan across the Chinese border.
He was able to make his way back to San Francisco within a week.
And with the kind help of the Fulbright Committee,
And the late, great Senator Dianne Feinstein, who went to bat for him, he got asylum.
And he's here now in San Francisco as a resident working in the hotel business.
So that's just one of the many stories that we have.
