Colleagues, September is National Recovery Month, and today I am proud to recognize the Department of Public Health's Living Proof SF campaign, together with the 11 San Franciscans who have shared their stories of addiction, treatment, and recovery with our city.

So I want to thank each of you for helping make recovery visible in San Francisco.
I say that as someone who's also in recovery and who has a very personal connection to this work.
For far too long, addiction has been stigmatized.
It is something that has been
People have been expected to hide, and recovery has too often been treated the same way.
We need to change that.
People who are struggling need to see that treatment works and that recovery is possible, and that there are people in their city who understand what they're going through.
That is what living proof does so well.
These 11 San Franciscans made the brave and inspiring decision to put their faces, their names, and their stories out in the world and to talk honestly about some of the hardest experiences in their lives because they knew it might help someone else.
That takes real courage.
