And it also has real value.

Stigma continues to keep people from seeking treatment.

And one of the most effective ways to break through that stigma is for people in recovery to be open about their own experiences and to show others that there is a real path forward.

I keep living proof posters on display in my city hall office.

because it inspires me and because I think it is important for people to see recovery represented in the place where decisions about addiction, treatment, and public health are being made every day.

Recovery belongs in City Hall, in our neighborhoods, and in the broader conversation about addiction in San Francisco.

Every one of these individuals here is helping challenge the stereotypes that still surround substance use disorder and showing that there is no single picture of addiction, just there is no single picture of recovery.

San Francisco has lost far too many people to addiction and overdose.

And while overdose deaths have come down from their recent historic highs, we still have a tremendous amount of work ahead of us.

Part of that work is making sure treatment is available when people are ready for it, but another part is making sure people believe that treatment can work.

Sometimes the most convincing evidence is simply seeing another person who has been through it, who found help, and who has built a life in recovery.

Since Living Proof launched in 2024, the campaign has reached millions of people with messages of hope and healing and recovery and redemption.

Those numbers are impressive, but what matters most is the person who may see those stories on a bus shelter or online or somewhere in their neighborhood and to recognize something of themselves in it.

The people participating in this campaign may never know who decided to seek help because of their story.

but know that they're out there because that's the kind of impact this work has.

So during Recovery Month, I want to thank the Department of Public Health for creating the Living Proof SF campaign and special thanks to Siobhan, to Michael, Jean, Kevin, Juliana, Alyssa, Jen, Dominique, Gregory, Erica, and Joel for having the courage to be the faces of it.

Thank you for making recovery visible.

and for giving people hope, and for reminding San Francisco that treatment works and recovery is possible.
