So for COVID-19, if we go with 2.6, which is the figure we've heard from the Australian estimates, then you're gonna need 61% of the population to be immune, to achieve herd immunity.

Besides which I think about half the Australian population is aged forty and over.
So uh to achieve sixty one percent of people infected, you're looking at a worst case scenario.
Um, considering that, you know, China had less than one percent of their population infected and Italy is nowhere near sixty one percent.

I think anything that we can do to reduce the contact of people with each other will help.
It's particularly important the social distancing is particularly important with this infection because there is the potential for transmission from people who don't have any symptoms.
Um it's much easier to control a disease where it's only infectious with symptoms and uh you can you can get away with less social distancing, but for some
where there's no symptoms, uh that where people can transmit it without symptoms, the social d social distancing measures become even more important.

Okay, so the first question was about why uh emerging infections are severe at the beginning and then tend to become milder.
Partly it's because populations develop immunity.
That's particularly true with viral diseases, and partly it's because we figure out disease control mechanisms.
You know, in the case of syphilis, people figured out it was sexually transmitted and um, you know, use of appropriate precautions.
