He's being childlike.
Sometimes he'll laugh or, like, mimic voices.
Sometimes he'll just go silent.

So it seems like he's planning to flee this place, but it also seems like he doesn't really have a plan.
Regardless, police aren't about to give him a helicopter.
Now, at some point during the negotiations, he decides that he doesn't want the hostage anymore.
And he unfortunately shoots his only hostage.
And of course, outside, police, they don't know this is going down.
Otherwise, they would probably rush in and arrest him.

And negotiations, they're just, they're not getting anywhere.

Because apparently it runs on batteries, and like, the batteries are dying.
So police completely lose communication with Martin, and they have no idea what he's gonna do next.
And so eventually, it's the next morning.
And Martin and the police have been in this standoff for 18 hours at this point.
And Martin, I guess he wants to create some confusion and make a run for it during the chaos.
And he plans on doing that by setting the cottage on fire.
