And it's really the efforts by the European Union and the sort of growing consensus that they need to find some kind of way to push back against China, possibly in sort of the style that the U.S.
did with kind of quite sweeping tariffs, but without starting a full on trade war.
And we did see that statement from the G7, coincidentally, essentially kind of calling out China and saying that the goal is that no one country, so they didn't sort of without specifically targeting China, but no one country should have control over rare earths and permanent magnets.
And they want to reduce that limit to about 60 percent.
It's really important, although I know it sort of seems niche, but China essentially controls China.
About 70%, some have it higher, more like 80% of the world's supplies of rare earths and pure magnets and permanent magnets.
And they're essential to absolutely everything that happens.
And this sort of chokehold over a key part of the supply chain has given it extraordinary leverage when it comes to trade negotiations.
It's essentially the factor that took the teeth out of all of those U.S.
tariffs when we saw negotiations between President Xi and President Trump
earlier this year.
So it's this really big sort of question mark on how now we've seen sort of the US somewhat start to have a bit more of a sort of stable trade relationship.
They've kind of felt each other out.
We sort of have a framework for what's going to happen going forward.
Now we see the EU kind of entering this same dilemma.
How are they going to deal with that?
And I was just reading some sort of excellent coverage from my colleagues across in Europe who calculated that the deficit is about one billion euros a day between China and the EU.
So first is obviously Walter Todd.
