I'm so happy to be invited to speak on the Earl of Rochester.
He was actually, he was my first, I'm going to embarrass myself here, my first love when it came to the Restoration Court when I was young and I wrote my undergraduate dissertation about him and the court width.
So it's a real pleasure.
So he was born in 1647.
And anybody that knows anything about the 17th century will realise that that is right at the tail end of the conflict that consumed England.
England, Scotland and Ireland during what we call the Civil Wars or the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
Obviously, he was a baby, so he wasn't involved in any of that.
But his father was.
His father was a really formidable soldier who'd fought on the continent during the Thirty Years' War.
And then he also was a royalist supporting Charles I to begin with.
And then after Charles I's execution,
acting as a kind of ward or guardian to the young future Charles II.
It's kind of a baptism of fire in terms of his birth and the era that he emerges.
It's interesting, isn't it?
Because the temptation is to say fundamentally, because they do seem binary.
He wouldn't have known his father very well at all.
His father died in 1658.
So that's the first thing to say, I guess.
