He had a very religious upbringing, and she remained devout throughout her life, as were most people in
the 17th century.
And in the early modern period, it's very rare to have somebody deeply questioning faith.
What we do see is a splintering of religions, which obviously you're very aware of in the 16th century, but it continues into the 17th.
So yeah, I do think that devoutness, regardless of the flavour, whether it was Puritan or not, I do think that shaped Rochester's early life.
I think he was brought up to believe in and
Anglican faith and shaped in that way, especially as it looked more like Charles II would be restored to the throne.
The court was, it didn't really live true to religious teachings.
I mean, I guess that's a really polite way to say

So yes, he did start at Oxford at a young age.
So he was 13.
He graduated, in inverted commas, when he was 14.
There was a tradition of the nobility entering university much younger than we see today.
So that was not necessarily exceptional.
He'd already had full schooling.
He'd attended a grammar school.
He'd had tutors.
He'd obviously been brought up with a religious tutor as well.
