Of course, we've talked about the Halo effect on the show before.
So the thing about celebrity wellness brands is that most often the celebrity who has started the brand has already integrated themselves into your life parasocially via social media.
So now they are able to be both the influencer selling you the product and the CEO who ends up with the bag at the end.
And they get to have their cake and eat it too.
And by leaning into the mental health related, spiritual and physical insecurities of Gen Z, they're able to do so from both the makeup counter and the therapist's office.
So now we're gonna get into a worst-case scenario of the celebrity wellness brand, which is Wondermind.
Until now, I think has mostly felt a little bit like makeup, but that's kind of my point here is that it starts as makeup, it starts as a Sunday reset.
And then wellness starts to extrapolate into something much darker and more all-encompassing.
Obviously, mental health is a very hot topic always, mental health among youngins, especially, according to a Gallup and Walden Foundation family report, Gen Z has the poorest mental health of any generation.
Yikes.
So of course, all of the people in our damn phone are trying to market us ways to feel better.
The reason I wanted to do this episode in the first place is because way back in September twenty twenty five, I saw a worst case scenario of this cult unfold in the wild.
That is to say, I read a brilliant piece in the cut by Angelina Chapman called What Happened at Wondermine that detailed the culty and turbulent downward spiral of one of Selena Gomez's wellness startup.
You should totally go read the piece, which we will link in the show notes, but I'm gonna give you all the culty tidbits here.
If you don't know who Selena Gomez is, she's a child star, turned pop star in beauty mogul.
She makes music, as well as being the owner and founder of Rare Beauty, her first celebrity wellness beauty brand.
However, in 2021, Gomez endeavored on a new entrepreneurial journey alongside her mother, Mandy Tifey, whom she enlisted as her new startup Wondermind's co-founder.
Wondermind was intended to be a multiformat media hub hosting mental health-related podcasts.
TV shows and films.
Basically, it was supposed to be a little app with a bunch of mental fitness tools.
