So for those not familiar, this referred to a series of computer programs and errors that were unable to store data or distinguish dates past the year 1999.
So the idea was that computers couldn't process that many zeros
and all technology was going to end at the same time as the world the second that the clock turned midnight on the year 2000.
The lack of information and clarity around this led so many people to speculate that society was headed towards a technological
apocalypse, that it led to mass hysteria, even encouraging true devout believers to purchase firearms, generators, bury large piles of money, and stock up on food and water.
So you know your typical culty doomsday prepping.
Of course, the clock struck midnight, the year 2000 began, and da da da da, nothing happened.
Companies simply fixed this problem and upgraded their computer systems and moved on.
But the problem was addressed.
The conspiracy theories certainly set the tone for the decade to follow.
In fact, then U.S.
President Bill Clinton even referred to the Y2K scare as the first challenge of the 21st century successfully met.
Way to bow yourself on the back there.
Not Bill Clinton taking credit for nothing happening.
But some might say that anxiety still lingers.
It's inspired a string of Y2K-themed music, movies, and media, as well as a series of spinoff conspiracies, such as the year 2010 problem, the year 2022 problem, and of course, some conspiracy theories around leap years.
Yeah.
