Well, let's jump into the history of the cult and we can talk about the connection between doomsday spiraling and cute butterfly aesthetics and clips in your hair and sparkles and dazzles and big colorful clothing.

So Y2K refers to an early 2000s fashion and lifestyle aesthetic, also known as cybercore, which focuses on neo-futurism.

So think like bright colors, prints and patterns, but also the introduction of technological advancement.

But funny enough, the term Y2K wasn't actually popularized as a mainstream descriptor for this era until the 2020s.

But we'll get back to that later.

And people were simultaneously feeling more isolated and more connected than ever.

Now experts don't necessarily agree on the origins of Y2K fashion and aesthetic, but the trend cycle most commonly associated with Y2K was particularly popular in Asia.

especially Japan, China, and South Korea.

So this can be seen in the 2000s in the rise of the Harajuku girl and cyber fashion, as well as in present day with the success of K-pop artists who gravitate towards Y2K clothing and accessories.

Well, it's no coincidence that the return of Y2K aesthetic has coincided with end times, because in the years that led to the turn of the millennium, the public began speculating about the threat of the Y2K scare, which was also known as the year 2000's problem.
