And they'd decided not to participate.
Then, not long before we were due to publish this podcast, I sent them one last email to let them know when the podcast was coming out and what the story was going to cover.
I also needed to send them a couple of comments made by Toby and Catherine.
As a journalist, it's part of my process to let people know if someone else has made a claim about them or told a different version of the same story.
In this case, I needed to let Garby and Gustav know about two things.
Contrary to what the Strobels had said publicly, the
Toby claimed he'd already told the family the truth about what happened that night.
So I wanted to put that to them.
Also, there seem to be differing versions of that conversation between Toby's sister Catherine and the Strobel family.
Remember, Simone's dad said Catron told him she wouldn't talk about that night, even if she was being tortured.
But Cather remembered that conversation differently, so I needed to put that to them as well.
I wrote them a letter.
Simone's parents replied with a statement, which they asked that I only include in full.
I said I would respect that request.
And I'll read that statement to you in full now.
Mr Baker's letter sets out Tobias Moran and Catherine Sukfull's versions of certain important matters.
We deny these accounts are truthful.
Tobias Moran has admitted that he and his sister lied about matters relating to Simone's disappearance and murder because the police were not taking her disappearance seriously enough.
We have never found that explanation logical or convincing, as he told these lies on his first encounter with police, before anyone could have known a crime had occurred.
The coroner and counsel assisting described Tobias's lies as persistent, numerous and reprehensible.
