The local paper described how some people were in tears as they dropped off their money to support the grieving backpackers.
The article said a single mum had donated the last $5 in her wallet and kids were donating their pocket money to the fund.
In the end, the community raised far more than what Tobias would need for his airfare home.
The rest was given to Simone's family to help with other costs.
It was like the whole town of Lismore had shared the grief of the German backpackers and the community had tried as best it could to show love and support in whatever way possible.
But all that support for Tobias and his fellow travellers was about to start draining away.
Because as the investigations continued and details found their way into the media, it emerged that all three backpackers had been lying to police.
