And Darwin's friends got around and realised that Darwin was going to be upstaged by this, not deliberately, but they decided that the best thing to do was have a meeting of, I think, the Linnaean Society.
Yes, both papers were read.
The only person who noticed it was the professor of geography from Trinity College, Houghton.
Samuel Houghton was his first name.
Now, he, interestingly enough…
In his notes on it says, oh, this was the most uninteresting meeting.
Anything new was false and anything stated was old and well known.
Now, this was the most extraordinary meeting in the whole history of biology.
In a sense, it changed everything.
And here is Samuel Houghton not noticing it, but that's a side issue.
And, of course, then the theory of evolution came out, was published in 1859 on the origin of species.
But to put the record straight, there was a character, a fellow called Patrick Matthew, I think.
who 30 years before published a book.
He was a naval architect.
He designed ships for the British Navy.
He was a Scotsman, I think.
And he published a book on naval architecture and he had an appendix in it.
And the appendix set out the theory of natural selection extremely accurately.
In fact, you know, it is an extraordinary thing.
I never read it, so I can't say whether I think it's right myself or not.
