I grew up in Limerick and we never saw a squirrel of any kind, red, grey or anything else.

We saw the eaten kernels of pine forests and things, but we never saw the actual squirrels.

Now, my sons and their children...

have enjoyed grey squirrels immensely.

The squirrels are part of their world.

This animal has wonderful amenity value.

It's entertaining.

It's everywhere.

Even in my location in Malahide, where there are few trees, even in that remote place, they are present.

I think, and first I must ask you,

Don't these two animals have separate niches in a sense?

I always think of the red lives up high in the trees.

He's nice and light.

He wishes he was a bird.

He doesn't want to be a squirrel anymore.

Whereas the grey is kind of down on the ground and they're segregated.

Can we tolerate the two of them?

Is there a place for this alien in our community?

But isn't the grey more of a carnivore and that sort of thing?

And isn't it true that the reds like to live high in the trees and they're vegetarian?
