Well, Zivchak had a way more complex conspiracy theory than that.
He said it was a conspiracy between the STB, their secret police, and the KGB.
The KGB in Moscow saw that the hardliners in Prague had no future, and they wanted to conspire to have the hardliners overthrown so a moderate Communist Party government could take over, which would be much more stable, much more popular, and therefore ensure the survival of the one-party Communist Party state.
That was what Ludwig Zivcek said was the plan.
He said he was Martin Schmidt.
He had been the guy.
He'd faked being killed, and that was the story that was sprung.
It was this massive conspiracy that was launched to pretend a nice boy called Martin Schmidt had been killed.
So when I'm researching this for my book, I go, wow, that's pretty wild.
The BBC reported this, that Ludwig Zivjak was the real instigator of the Velvet Revolution.
And it kind of boggled everyone's mind.
Like, what if the real, the catalyst for the Velvet Revolution weren't these brave students?
But this Machiavellian young secret policeman who pretended to be dead and then took the name Martin Schmidt in order to bring down the regime.
The ultimate false flag.
The ultimate false flag operation.
What the regime, according to Zivjak, they hadn't really seen that what was going to happen was that the whole regime was going to collapse.
So in that sense, Zivjak said that the conspiracy was too successful.
They were too clever by half and they'd been undone.
But after the fact, once they got themselves a democratic parliament, the parliament held an inquiry into Ludwig Zivchak's allegations.
And they said, this guy is a total bullshitter.
