And something else you wrote about emissions was that AI is quickly overtaking air travel for total emissions, which, you know, so many of us are trying to stop flying and really conscious about that question.
How many of us are actually thinking about when we use AI on our phones or on our devices day by day?
And last year, Investigate Europe, an investigative journalist body, came up with the fact that some of the major US-based AI companies, Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Meta,
successfully lobbied the European Commission to be able to keep secret the environmental impact of individual data centres.
So we can't measure that.
And that was published in El Pais, in Le Monde and in The Guardian.
I think you were quoted in one of those articles.
How did you respond when you saw that?
Catherine, I don't want this podcast to be anti-AI.
I think we need to look at the advantages as well as the challenges that there are.
And in your work, many people say that there's huge potential in AI to meet sustainability challenges.
Do you want to lay out what that case is?
Alex, I was with some Indian colleagues recently who said we're going to be the dirty processing here, that the data centres are going to be dumped in the global south and they'll be offshoring just the way that we've seen in previous generations and all the benefits will flow to the global north, but all the disbenefits will take place in the global south.
It was only one view, but is there a danger of that?
Your past in the AI, in the OCD correction, where you had a very distinguished career, the OCD AI principles are obviously one of the key sets of principles for what is responsible AI.
There's others, there's the GPI.
AI code of conduct, there's a code in UNESCO, and Alex has already referred to the European Union AI Act, which is not a code, it's a piece of legislation.
We can't go through each of those line by line.
What are the common elements there that it's important for people and companies to understand?
