Look at what is now called Nuristan, what used to be called Kafiristan, and a region in Afghanistan.
Kafiristan means land of the unbelievers.
These people did not start to convert to Islam until the nineteen sixties.
And by the time the radicals arrived in the nineteen eighties, maybe five percent, maybe ten percent, I mean there's no good census data here, uh, were Muslim.
But through war and conquest, uh, they wanted to convert them to Islam.
A lot of bin Laden and the associated Arab terrorist groups were attacks against these tribal people in what was called once Nafkafiristan and is now known as Nuristan, land of light, because they
didn't succeed and
Converting the majority of them.
Right.
So that's the ideological and targeting uh focus of the Arabs was on the Afghans who were not following their form of Islam.
the native Afghans who the CIA was funding, their goal was getting rid of the Soviets, which was the US foreign policy goal.
So
It would have been pointless.
To fund these groups.
They're hard to control, hard to manage, built trained, and don't share your objectives.
And on top of all that, they want to kill you uh if you're a CIA official, right?
So it just operationally makes no sense.
But when I talk to uh Beardon, who is one of the CIA I talked to every living CIA station chief for Afghanistan who served between nineteen eighty and nineteen ninety two.
Right.
Now you could say, okay, these are self interested.
