Like I think colour, bright colour, almost kind of hyper real colour is something that I would say is definitely a feature of still life paintings.
I guess the one artist in the book who kind of maybe challenges that a bit is John Simeon Chardin and there's a few
poems of mine which kind of are speaking back to paintings by him and he's really interesting because um he works with um you know the color brown a lot and he primed his canvases and these these really sort of rich dark brown colors and he would move
the brown paint around until somehow the arrangement of browns on the canvas spoke to the objects he was trying to paint.
And so it's almost like the objects emerged from the darkness.
So they do have a kind of a darker hue than some of the other paintings.
But yeah, bright colours is definitely a feature.
Absolutely.
And this speaks back to those roses that I was talking about by Marguerite Habermann and Rachel Roche.
Still life with rose.
Like a foreskin being pulled back, the damask reveals...
pelvic bowl of pink-fringed shadow, dense, sweet-meat blue, coralled cave, puce, empyrean, with no vanishing point, planetary blush.
So let me in, where everything is newborn and crystalline, paused and protected, into that other world,
that high shine place of safety arranged and sparking up like a bower.
Almost every day, for some moments, I think about him.
The black stems, thorns that can prick so deeply, whirl of serrated leaves, all just beneath.
around still gorgeousness your petalled cumulus your constancy helps me live oh rose keep on stunning for me for all us boys who have been ruined by men
Wow, I really love that idea, the idea of looking at something, the icon looking back.
Yeah, that's absolutely fascinating.
I mean, yeah, I guess so.
