I can't tell you how many times I've done that in my life, where I'm like, I think I need to go see someone.
So that book was a turning point for, you know, it essentially created this book without her knowing it at the time.
But there was so much else that I wanted to mine.
Like, I didn't just want this to be a book about trauma.
Like, there are better people to write about that than me.
But I wanted to write a book about the things that negate it, I should say, to some degree, at least.
And there's so many other... And reading, you do that through books.
I mean, my favourite book of all time, I think, is Ocean Vuong's On Earth, We're Briefly Gorgeous, which is just...
I mean, he's a Vietnamese-American poet and he writes like a poet, but this is a fiction book about, you know, this little boy called Little Dog and it is... It's kind of like a... It's an assessment of masculinity, of, you know, being the other, of being queer in this...
you know, kind of American kind of hellscape, really.
And he forms this relationship with this kind of real white-bred farm boy called Trevor, I think, from memory.
And there's a great line in there where he says, you know, to be a boy in America is like being born into a cage, but to be a boy in America with a gun is to move from one side of the cage to the other.
And, I mean, that broke me, but the line that really ended me, I think, was... And this is...
so true in my own life where he says sometimes it feels like being offered tenderness is the very proof that you've been ruined.
Because it's like here, it's kind of like you're discovering something for the first time and realising that you've gone your whole life without it.
And then you're like, oh my God, that's what it is.
And so like that book is just phenomenal, phenomenal.
I change it every day because I love... But tell us about that one.
Yeah, if I ever had kids, I'd be like, I don't have any favourites.
Of course I know that's not true.
