One regular blood donor, her name is Sarah.
She donates like r as regularly as you can every three months.
Sarah doesn't donate to have her donation given to a patient.
She donates so that her blood can be divided up into little vials and essentially sent all around the country.
So if you're getting your blood typed in a hospital, so they don't know if you're ABO or RH pos or ned or just to confirm what you are, they use Sarah's red blood cells as well as other donors.
And it took them a while to figure out what this strange reaction was, and it was this whole new blood type that no one in the world had ever seen before.
So the first process is actually proving that this is unique and that took years in this first case.
So you have to show that you can't say that this blood type is another blood type that is already well characterized.
So once you've shown, okay, this is a new blood type, there's nothing like that around Sarah's family at that time, donated blood
They did some really early
kind of serological investigations to try and put this red blood cell antigen into one of the existing blood groups.
They also did some really early sequencing technology that was available and essentially they came up with nothing.
They couldn't narrow it down very far.
In Canada in two thousand and ten.
A woman was pregnant and essentially her body started to produce antibodies which were attacking her fetus.
So they took some blood from the mother to try and work out which red blood cell antigen this antibody was raised against.
And it took quite a while, they weren't really sure, and essentially they narrowed it down to thinking this has to be something so so rare.
We haven't seen it before.
Or maybe it's the same Sarah antigen that they found in Australia twenty years ago.
