So at that point they sent some samples across to Australia and it was confirmed that yes, this baby had essentially inherited the Sarah blood type from the father and the mother was recognizing it as foreign, producing antibodies and her immune system was attacking her fetus.
Hey, this is a really cool project, and now we have more samples available.
We might actually be able to figure out what this is.
So, as a student at the blood service, I essentially put my hand up and said, That sounds like an awesome project.
I had to contact the original Sarah.
I said, We would love to figure out what your blood type is.
If we can, would you be happy to be involved again?

She was.
She got all her family on board.
I did whole exome sequencing, which essentially involves sequencing all the gene coding parts of someone's DNA.
It's quite new and up and coming technology.
And then from there you have to sort through that absolutely massive amount of data and figure out if you know
What Sarah and her family members who had this rare blood type, what's different about their DNA compared to the family members who didn't inherit this rare blood type?
Uh yes.
I think after the whole exome sequencing we had about half a million DNA differences between SARA and the family members who didn't have the SARA blood type.
Having multiple generations was really useful in this data set and narrowing it down in that way.
