So once we had identified the gene, we approached the Canadian family and said, you know, we do need to validate this.
They were happy to be involved as well.
And we found the exact same DNA change in that family.
It is detective work.
You've got th this huge amount of data in front of you and you need to ask the right questions to get the answer.
So once I had enough evidence from the Australian family and then validated it with the Canadian family, we had to travel overseas to the International Society of Blood Transfusion.
I presented all the data I generated and they had to vote on whether Sarah would officially be recognized as a new blood type or not.
It's a committee who votes whether they've seen enough evidence for this to be internationally recognized or not.
It was unanimous that Sarah was a new blood type.
Exactly, that's exactly what happens.
So though I think there was about thirty-ish people in the committee, so I had to get up with my PowerPoint slides.
I had to explain the Sarah family tree, and then I propose that it's a new blood type and the committee has to vote yes.
If they vote no, they would have to I suppose explain what they would like to see that that hasn't been presented.
Yeah.
They did it right in front of me.
It was.
I think if there was obvious tension in the room, maybe I would have had to leave the room for a while, but um
I've heard uh that can actually happen.
People get very heated.
The media knows that was very tame.
