And when he talks about the quality of life and human well being, I mean if we look at hedonistic measures, plenty of people are take pleasure just in being alive, like we talked about earlier, like Nagel.
Uh they have this temperament that their glass is always almost close to the top.
You know, Benatar says he hates being hungry, so even if he enjoys a meal, he knows he's hungry before it's horrible and he'll be hungry again.
But other people enjoy being hungry because then they anticipate the pleasure of having the meal.
And there's just not one way of
experiencing that or assessing that experience that's more um
objectively true than the next.
It's interpretive.
Um
And on you know, if you think about
Um
well being as satisfying your desires, then the fact that we adapt our desires to what we can attain will only allow us to enjoy more well being if we're thinking about well being as desire satisfaction.
So if we think about well being as hedonism, uh you know, on hedonistic measures, people tend to do very well by their own assessments.
uh desire fulfillment measures, even by Benetar's assessment, even though he says it's a Pollyanna thing, it doesn't matter.
It's still you're having your desire satisfied.
Um and if we look at objective list theories of the good, people tend to say to you know, think that they're doing well on those measures of the good.
Also, Benetar criticizes that way of assessing well being, but
He doesn't offer an alternate way of assessing well being on which his view, which is that, you know, life is terrible, comes out as objectively more true than another view.
So I just don't see that his view succeeds in that way.
