I just want you to think that I'm naturally good looking.

Is that the, that natural beauty is better than artificial beauty?

Yeah.

And I think this suggests, at least to me, and I'm curious what Steve thinks about this, is that we evolved to respond more so to signals than to the underlying property.

So I'm imagining a sort of a variation of the study you described where you see someone who's very plain looking.

And for whatever reason, you know, it's a contrived scenario, but they used to be very hot and then they got some surgery and now they're unattractive.

And you have a choice between sleeping with this artificially unattractive person who's naturally hot or a person who is artificially hot but naturally is unattractive.

Who do you choose?

I think most people, especially most men, I think would choose the artificially hot one because we respond more so to these signals than the underlying sort of trait that it's meant to communicate.

I could not.

The way that you would press the indicator, I could never.

I mean, we place more value on looks.

So would it be something like, you know, seeing, you know, if your spouse, you know, gains some weight or maybe first thing in the morning looks a little disheveled or something along those lines that...

Well, so I wrote this piece, The Myth of the Chad, and I think it dropped it in the group chat, which is, you know, for a long time, we've heard this story.

I think you and I talked about this on a previous podcast, Chris, because it made some level of intuitive sense that

as the dating marketplace has become more deregulated, people can meet each other.

We live in sexual capital, late sexual capitalism.

And so now you have, you know, with dating apps, online dating,

dating people can meet each other more easily we are supposedly placing more value on looks as a result of social media dating ads and so on so the story was and we saw some statistical trends that supported this notion at least initially that a small percentage of men were getting the majority of female attention and

And that men sort of on the lower end of mate value were getting increasingly less female interest.
