I don't have a sense of what your kind of day-to-day is like.
So it sounds like a pretty big remit.
How how large is the kind of team that's working on all these questions?
So I guess Google DeepMind has uh over the last year or two become like more integrated into the rest of Google, right?
So I imagine are there other groups within this broader entity, I guess alphabet, that take an interest in these questions?
Or are you maybe maybe m the only group that's thinking about these like front like I guess you're thinking about the most important models and upcoming upcoming issues and and threats.
Um are there many other groups that take an interest uh uh having that kind of foresight and thinking years ahead?
Okay, so I guess so back in twenty twenty one, you'd been the the founding director of the Center for the Governance of AI, Gov AI, um, which was a reasonably big, big deal then.
Um I think it's gone on maybe maybe to be an even bigger deal since it's like pretty prominent uh voice in the in the conversation around um governance of AI.
Why did you decide to to leave this thing that was good that was going quite well, uh, to go and work at um at uh Google Deepmind instead?
We think that in the in the fullness of time it's gonna be close to close to 100%, uh certain certainly more than 10%, and it's like 0.01% now, or certainly not more than 0.1% in terms of total revenue.
So uh yeah, there's like many orders of magnitude to go up yet.
Let let's open though by talking about the work that you did in uh your like previous incarnation, which was uh as as an academic.
So I think uh you did your thesis uh you know back in the early 2010s on technological determinism.
Was was it was was that?
main focus.
I think you're uh the paper that came out of that opens with uh who, if anyone, controls technological change.
What was the academic debate there that you were reacting to or try trying to trying to a part of?
The thing that we have to try to reconcile here is that on the one hand, we see these trends that seem like they're not really responsive to any person's particular decisions.
They're acting almost like uh it's a little bit like the what's it the psycho history in uh in in foundation, where you just have these like broad trends where everyone is uh just an ant in the in the in the in the in this broader process.
