If everyone did that, then there would suddenly be a huge problem.

My daughter bought one on the weekend when she was at the festival.

Then she came home with one and it was like, oh no.

It's not the most drastic of rebellion.

So my news today comes from a DEFRA report that was released.

And it was... It comes from actually the University of Portsmouth for DEFRA.

So great that they're utilising universities to do some primary research on this.

And it argued basically that we're putting way too much effort into recycling and nowhere near enough effort into reuse and design, design for reuse.

And...

Given the trash talk today, isn't that true?

We're talking all the time about recycling, recycling infrastructure, but so little about the design of packaging.

And a few things... In our defense, we are a recycling podcast.

But what the report was basically saying is that so few things get beyond the trial stage.

That's true of recycling as well, given FlexCollect.

but for reuse particularly you know they're small scale and they just never actually become normalised whereas we have had plenty of recycling that's just become standard practice hasn't it recycling your glass bottles your aluminium cans that's just very normal to people whereas reusable packaging and smarter packaging is still got a long way to go they also sort of said we really need some common standards for things and

Heaven forbid this is something that people have talked about for years, not having such a diverse range of packaging, when quite often they're fundamentally doing exactly the same job.

It's just that you're trying to make it look different so it stands out from your competitor.

And that comes at the detriment of much better packaging that's easier to manage at the end of its life.

reforming how public procurement works what can the government do to actually mandate the way that you know it's got a huge bill in terms of the things the goods that it procures what can they do themselves you know this report was for defra to say actually we just want to set higher standards of the packaging that we accept on government sites on government buildings and
