And whereas both the Western and Eastern Monarch populations have seen significant declines, with less than 1% of the Western monarch population remaining, while the eastern population has fallen by as much as 90 percent.
Whereas the city of Charlotte recognizes that human health ultimately depends on well-functioning ecosystems and that biodiverse regions can better support food production.
Healthy soil and air quality and can foster healthy connections between humans and wildlife.
And whereas cities, towns, and counties play a critical role in saving the monarch butterfly, and on August 18th, I, Mayor Rob Harrington, signed the National Wildlife Federation Mayor's Monarch Pledge, committing the City of Charlotte to taking meaningful
action to protect monarchs.
And whereas the City of Charlotte, together with its residents, is advancing monarch and pollinator conservation by planting native milkweed and nectar plants throughout the community and by installing and maintaining pollinator gardens at locations including Old City Hall, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Governance Center.

Now, therefore, I, Robert E.
Harrington, Mayor of Charlotte, do hereby proclaim September 19, 2026 as Mayor's Monarch Pledge Day in the City of Charlotte, and encourage all residents to participate in community activities that support and celebrate monarch conservation.
