April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, educating our community, supporting survivors, and working to prevent sexual violence. Our detectives partner with organizations such as Safe Alliance, the Sexual Trauma Resource Center, local hospitals, and the District Attorney's Office to provide survivors with a trauma-informed, Victim-centered approach. We know that coming forward after a sexual assault can feel overwhelming. Many survivors are unsure, hesitant, or simply trying to move forward in the best way they can. Our role is to meet you where you are, offering support, information, and guidance while pursuing justice for those who choose to move forward with a criminal investigation.
CMPD is fortunate to have two full-time victim advocates who serve as the first point of contact for.
My name is Kirsten Abbott, and I'm an advocate with CMPD's Sexual Assault Unit. The impact of sexual assault could be profound, and the criminal justice process may feel daunting on top of everything a survivor is already going through. As an advocate, I'm here to walk alongside survivors, explaining each step of the investigation and connecting them with resources, services, and ongoing support to try and lessen any burden that I can. If you have experienced a sexual assault, your safety comes first. Get to a safe place as soon as possible. If you decide to make a police report, you can call 911, visit any of CMPD's 13 division offices, or come to the Law Enforcement Center. You can also go to any hospital emergency department for a medical evaluation or a sexual assault kit, and if you choose, hospital staff can contact law enforcement on your behalf if you are uncomfortable doing so yourself.
In North Carolina, sexual assault exams are free and can also be completed anonymously if you're not ready to file a police report. Whatever you're feeling is valid, you're not alone. There are resources out there for you. We stand with survivors and we are here to support you in whatever way we can.
