You know, and I should say just uh to our listeners that um
You know, this book was some time in the making.
And it really seems I mean
to me to have paid off in that um
This is a, you know, look th your book is a is is a heavily detailed, very um uh sort of focused on like actual conditions in the real world, um, even though uh uh you're not uh even though you you're you're realistic about the prospects of large scale short-term uh uh transfers uh into lotocratic systems.
Um it's um if if those transfers aren't gonna happen, it's not because you haven't thought through some of the uh some of the institutional issues about what we're talking about, right?
Right, right, right.
Well th the the book succeeds uh on lots of uh uh um metrics, but um the detail is really impressive.
So um why don't we d begin to talk about the the book uh more systematically?
Um so
I want to sort of begin with some background, even though um what I'm about to ask you to discuss is doesn't come up until a little bit later in the book, uh might be helpful, I think, to our listeners.
Um, to get s a quick overview from you about various ways historically and even in some contemporary uh work, um, where uh the idea of um lotteries or sortition um uh has
been sort of proposed as um a democratic alternative to familiar electoral instruments.
Can you just sort of you know sort of inch us into uh uh the topic by, you know
as I had mentioned in the introduction, Aristotle has this idea, but he's not the only one, right?
Fantastic.
You know, every once in a while I I
mention Iceland, you know, in their constitutional experiment uh from, you know, ten no a little bit over a decade ago.
And it's sort of surprising as it's sort of not on the radar uh um uh uh among a lot of I mean among not only among sort of um you know just ordinary my ordinary fellow citizens, but um even among academics, the idea that there's a whole country that sought to rewrite its constitution.
