So um

Let's let's get to talking about the book.

And you know, I think it might be helpful to start with some of the background because um although I I I suspect um uh a good portion of our uh of our listeners will be familiar with you know some of the the the territorial borders within democratic theory or different ways of thinking about democracy, uh it might be helpful just to uh uh to start uh by um uh talking

A little bit about about some of that.

Specifically, you know, I want to ask you about the subtitle of the book.

So the subtitle of the book is A Critical Realist Theory of Democracy.

And you know, I want to ask you just what, you know, how what critical realism is in this context and how it differs from other uh styles of democracy.

I take it that

Um listeners might be

uh attuned to hearing the word realist when it comes out of the mouth of a political philosopher or a political theorist as um uh as indicating some kind of um approach to political theorizing that is demoralized or is or is you know is not moral, uh is is aims to be descriptive.

And so the critical realism sounds like it's a hybrid of

A uh a moral and a m a more descriptive view.

So can you tell us a little bit about that?

Yeah.

I love it when those I love it when you get convergences like that.

I remember um uh you probably will too, uh, you know, a couple of decades ago when critic uh critics of uh public reason um, you know, certain criticisms came from kind of conservative religious circles and radical feminist circles, and they were kind of the same critique.

Uh um so um l let's pick up then so so

The book is organized sort of around this sort of um uh this these two different ways of thinking about democracy, which you were just gesturing towards.
