Um this track or this idiom also strikes you as insufficient to uh to get us uh an attractive, workable conception of democracy.
Can you tell us a bit about that?
Right, good.
You know, you're reminding me of um, you know, K Kevin Elliott um has this uh in his Democracy for Busy People book has this idea of the the paradox of empowerment where it looks like there's reason to think that, you know, as we take up these initiatives that are supposed to create new sites of democratic engagement and participation and um expand access to meaningful
voice and all these good dem sounding democratic things, it turns out that we're just creating new ways for the people who already have power.
to exercise their power in that as we create new sites, it's just new places for people who are already um uh very influential in the old sites to just sort of step in and, you know, infl you know, infl ex uh exercise influence in new ways.
Uh
Good.
So let's turn now to the um to the positive proposal.
Um so I should just say, yeah,

So but but but let's now take up the positive uh view.
So um uh as the the the the um the subtitle suggests, it's you're offering a a kind of uh democratic theory.
Um and your proposal emphasizes the need um for to or or emphasizes you know a conception of democracy that places at the center the need.
need for resisting state capture.
Um this is the phenomenon by where um public power gets uh uh directed and deployed in pursuit of private ends at the expense of the public.
Um can you say a little bit more about this idea of capture and the need to resist it uh for democracy.

very um central uh and uh elaborate uh discussions in the book because I take it that part of the realist approach, uh that uh part of the the realism of your approach, I might I would put it, is um, you know, so once we start thinking of democracy as this system that's supposed to resist or, you know, manage tendencies towards state capture, um, I take it that
