And so you get Rothschilds and Lord Hartford, the founder of the Hartford Wallace Collection, those sort of collectors in America, the super sort of wealthy of the Gilded Age.

And so to buy a painting by Vigila Brown in 1980 was a really strange thing, which is what the director of the Barber did, Hamish Miles.

But he said, it's still in our records, that he wanted to buy a painting by Vigila Brown to, as it were...

offer a challenge to Reynolds and Gainsborough, by whom we already had portraits.

So that's quite an interesting take for 1980, I think, to do that.

And it's still one of the very few works that has been acquired in this country by her in relatively recent years.

So it's a bit of an outlier.

But hopefully more people will be taking note of her work.

I think she should be seen as one of the great colourists in art.

I mean, that influence of Rubens comes through there.

But her skill in that respect is really outstanding.

And that's one of the things that makes her work so memorable.

Picking up on what Francesca started to say about pastels and landscapes, there are, according to Vigée's memoirs, she made some 100 pastels in England as well of seascapes and landscapes, which have just disappeared.
