To be a coach at international level, everything is about reassessing and you can prepare.
everything is very much no margin of error.
You've got the specific games.
At club level, everything is about the next game.
Very rarely you've got real time to reassess.
Everything is almost about turning things very quickly, preparing players for the next game.
International football, everything allows you to almost look back and build from that, from international camp to international camp.
And then you've got, obviously, the big tournaments.
That's quite unique.
But I think I've learned to becoming a technical director allowed me to have that day-to-day without the players.
And you almost need to learn to coach the players or you're watching every game and you've got the opportunity to travel all over Europe and watching the best leagues in the world, watching your players.
But you do miss that opportunity.
Well, I found China has been fascinating.
Obviously, we've got players in the Chinese league and you get straight away, you see that's something different.
There's a lot of investments, a lot of desire to get the World Cup in China.
So there's a lot of focus on the Chinese league.
But the first thing is the goalkeeper has to be Chinese.
so straight away you know that the rules are very very different then you got this level of chinese players that they are quite different to the foreigners so you've got three world-class players with a very different level of chinese players everything works through translators um almost you could see i was in a meeting in one of the one of the the games
and there were four translators within the room while the coach was delivering the team meeting, which is fascinating.
It's not about what you say, it's did the player get what you wanted to tell them?
