The markets are proper Wild West at this point.
Well, also in favor of this not being luck, just a year afterwards, Jesse Livermore does have probably one of his most famous episodes, right?
So the San Francisco earthquake triggered a bit of a market quake as well.
But a year later, there was a massive one.
And I know Livermore had turned bullish again before 1907.
But 1907, the financial panic of 1907, that's a big one.
It's one of the biggest financial crises in history, right?
Yeah, I mean, there's no central bank that can deliver a surplus cash.
There is no deposit insurance.
So basically, everybody has an incentive to yak their money out as quickly as possible.
And then, frankly, it's just a massive banking calamity.
I think hundreds of banks fail.
And the market dropped something like 50%, right?
Well, also probably knowing he's now playing against John Payne, Morgan made him sort of change his mind and he starts going long as well.
Well, I've read elsewhere that there seems to be consensus that he was asking Livermore to do everybody a favour, but also maybe saying, look, we're going to be turning things around, so you might as well get out of the way so your shorts don't get mullered.
I read later on that Livermore told his sons that that was one of the proudest moments of his life, when the great J.P.
Morgan himself asked this former farm boy from Massachusetts for a favour, essentially.
