He was elected in 2010 and had this 16-year run.
In 2014, he infamously said that he was after creating an illiberal democracy.
Right.
But he later clarified, he said, I mean, a Christian democracy, which is to say, I reject liberalism as what it has come to mean in Europe, which is militant secularism, sexual permissiveness, etc., etc., etc.
He and the members of the Fidesz party, they wrote a constitution, but they put in there the idea that the family, not the individual, but the family is the building block of society, and the law should be there to support the family.
And they also put into the constitution that this nation was founded on Christianity.
The constitution was religiously tolerant.
I mean, there was no place—
in Europe where Jews were safer today than in Budapest, but Christianity was the framework there.
And they governed according to that.
It was not religiously coercive at all, but the Orban government put a lot of money into subsidizing the creation of bigger families to turn the fertility crisis around.
Well, it didn't work.
And it didn't work because it turns out the reason people aren't having children only, I think, tangentially has to do with not having enough money.
I think it has more to do with religion and loss of religion.

Hungary is mostly Catholic and Calvinist, but the churches there are moribund.
I'm sorry to say it, but in the 16 years Orban was in power, I mean, they were pro-Christian to the extent that many of us American religious and political conservatives could only dream of, and they couldn't turn it around.
You know, I'll concede that you have something of a point.
I mean, you can't deny that the Orban system was corrupt.
