You know, I had first gone to Hungary and to Central Europe in 2019 as I was traveling through that region researching Live Not By Lies, and I really liked it.
And the only thing I knew about Viktor Orban was what I had read in the American media, that he was a far-right thug.
It is screwed up that any American president would want anything to do with that autocratic thug.
I got to Hungary.
I'm like, wait a minute, this doesn't seem quite right.
What's going on here?
I was invited back by the Danube Institute, the think tank to which you referred earlier, on a fellowship, like a four-month fellowship in 2021.
And so I get to Hungary and I
I was there like the first few weeks.
And I thought, what are people talking about?
This seems like such a normal place.
It feels like, I don't know, Minneapolis in 1995.
It was beautiful, but it was safe.
The streets were clean.
There was street life.
And it was such a pleasure to me to welcome Americans and Brits to Budapest for the first time and to watch the scales fall from their eyes, whether or not they agreed with the Orban program or not.
They saw that they had been lied to.
This man is not a far-right thug.
He's incredibly intelligent and articulate.
But the thing that interested me as a conservative about him was to see if his experiment would work.
