And what I mean by that is that Europe is going to become re-enchanted.
I mean that in a sociological way, one way or the other, because this malaise cannot last.
What I tell people to do, what I would suggest they do, is rediscover our ancestral faith, not in a sort of consumerist, therapeutic way, but in all of its transcendent majesty.
For example, last summer, I went to the pilgrimage to Shatra.
The cathedral in France, 20,000 traditional Catholics, they take a three-day walking pilgrimage from the center of Paris to the cathedral in Chartres.
They camp on the way, they pray, they sing hymns, they celebrate mass, and they were all so joyful, and not in any sort of weird Jesus-campy way, but just very natural.
And I was interviewing them.
I said, so what brought you here?
And it was all some version of the same story.
Our parents' generation gave us nothing to live on.
We're here to seek meaning.
We're here to seek purpose.
We're here to seek community and transcendence and ultimately God.
We're not going to create utopia on earth, whether it's a Catholic utopia, Orthodox utopia, Islamic utopia.
It doesn't exist.
But we can create a better society than we have now.
And I think that Christian re-enchantment, which is the point of my last book, Living in Wonder, I think that's something we have to do.
Because we're not going to re-Christianize the world by moralism or certainly not by politics.
Viktor Orban's Hungary is a perfect example of that.
