He saw that it would be very dark and difficult for humanity to find some sense of meaning if God were dead.

You know, we can't make our own meaning.
Nietzsche was not a Nazi, but, you know, the sort of ideological convulsions that came in the 20th century with Soviet communism, with Nazism in Germany and so forth, all of them are products of the death of God.
I think that we are living through, at the bottom, a crisis of meaning.
People don't know why they should go on.
We have been raised by consumerist culture, and both the left and the right have a role to play in this, to believe that more freedom, more wealth is going to make us happy.
And it hasn't.
It's made us more miserable.
And you can look at the birth crisis, the fertility crisis.
I know that concerns you a lot, me too.
People just don't seem to have any reason to go on.
And I think it all ultimately goes back to a sense, a loss of a sense of transcendence.
Losing the transcendent sense of life has been deadly for us spiritually and morally and aesthetically.
Well, there is one of the most popular architects of the 20th century, Christopher Alexander.
He wrote a book called A Pattern Language, talking about how his study of what architecture thrives, what aspects of it make people feel good and feel connected to the whole.
And he found out that through whatever culture it is, they all follow certain patterns that you can find in nature.
and people have an intuitive, positive response to it.
