Whereas with modern architecture where the genius architect comes in and he's got this vision and he's going to execute it and people hate modern architecture.
Well, Christopher Alexander said, that's not an accident that we have lost a sense of organic-ness to the buildings we make, the art we create,
We have come to believe that art and architecture is about expressing our individual will, not connecting to any higher truth or not allowing a higher truth to be refracted through ourselves, but rather just imposing will.
And I think we've reached the dead end.
Over the course of the centuries, we lost that intuition and a sense of connection with truth that cannot be approached logically or through reason alone, but has to be approached through art, through beauty, through ritual, through religion.
And this is our problem now.
We have made ourselves miserable.
Well, the idea for the book came to me in 2015, which is the woke era.
We're only a couple of years into it, I would say.
I don't even know that we had that name for it then.
But I found out from a doctor in the Midwest, a cardiologist, who said, look, my mother –
escaped from communism.
She had spent several years in a Czech prison for being a Vatican spy, which is to say she refused the government's order to stop going to mass.
She got out, came to America, and she said, son, the things I'm seeing happen in America today, 2015, remind me a lot of what it was like when communism came to my home country.
And that struck me as kind of crazy.
But the more I started meeting in my travels to conferences, things like that, with people who had come to America from the Soviet bloc, I would say, hey, with the speech codes, cancel culture and all that, does that remind you of what you left behind?
Every one of them said yes.
And if you talk to them long enough, they would tell you how angry they were that Americans just didn't see it.
And so I started investigating this.
What are the similarities between old school totalitarianism and what are the differences?
