Basically, our idea of totalitarianism in America today is conditioned by the Soviet experience, right?
And from George Orwell's 1984.
Well, we don't have that.
But guess what?
We don't have a police state.
Right.
And we don't have bread lines.
We don't have the secret police.
We think that's not totalitarianism.
But look at the effect.
When people had to fear that they might lose their job because they were on the wrong side of the ruling ideology, or they said the wrong thing, told the wrong joke, et cetera, that's what totalitarianism is.
And the more deeply I dug into it, I saw that what wokeness is is a sort of pseudo religion.
It's a way of imposing moral order on people and punishing the heretics.
I traveled throughout the former Soviet block, talking to Christians and others who had stayed behind and resisted communism.
The key moment for me came on a tram in Budapest.
I was traveling with my interpreter, Anna,
Catholic woman in her 30s then, and we were just going between interviews.
And she said, you know, as a Catholic, I really struggle to talk to even my Catholic friends about the things happening in my life.
For example, if I tell them that my husband and I have been arguing a lot lately, they'll cut me off and say, oh, you've got to get a divorce.
You've got to go back to work.
