But the circumstances into which we were thrown, my son and I saw no better alternative.
I think that that's probably accurate of me 15, 20 years ago.
But the crash and burn of my family, a moving back, that...
That cracked me.
Let me back up even further, Ross.
As you brought up at the beginning, in 2002, I began writing about the abuse scandal as a faithful right-wing, paid-up Catholic, triumphalist Catholic.
Three years later, my faith was absolutely shattered by all the things I had learned, and I just couldn't believe it anymore.
It wasn't a matter of, oh, I found the flaw in the logic.
I just was exhausted by the fear and the anger.
And we ended up becoming Eastern Orthodox, not because we thought orthodoxy was free of problems, no religion is, but when I became an Orthodox, I was a very different sort of Christian.
I'd been so intellectually arrogant as a Catholic, and that's not on the Catholic church, that's on me.
I was 100% in favor of the Iraq War.
I was in New York as a journalist on 9-11, saw the South Tower fall with my own eyes, believed every word that came out of George W. Bush's mouth.
And I only realized years later what a fool I had been because I wanted someone to suffer.
And I bring all this up not to, I don't want to drag it out, but just to say that the idols I had made for myself, the Republican party, the conservative movement, the Catholic church, my family, and my father, most of all, all failed.
And so what am I left with now?
As Walker Percy would say.
Yeah, I mean, at the risk of sounding overly pious, the one thing I've been thrown back on is Jesus Christ and my faith in Jesus Christ, a man of sorrows and suffering.
The most important lesson I learned from interviewing all of the Christians who stayed behind in the Soviet sphere and resisted
None of them believed they would live to see the end of communism.
