But I will say once we started getting the subpoenas back, the Internet searches, the purchases of sex workers from burner phones, and we just started seeing that he kind of lived this world.
we eventually said we had to recover some DNA.
And we try to recover DNA from the garbage that they put in the sidewalk.
Once you put the garbage out, you don't need a search warrant to get somebody's DNA.
That's public access.
And so we recovered some items from the garbage, and we tried to match it to some of the evidence that was recovered.
Unfortunately,
The DNA that was recovered came back to women's DNA.
So it didn't necessarily come back to Rex Sherman.
So we said to ourselves, all right, we have to get what's called an abandonment, which is try to catch him in possession of something and recover it.
And at one time, he went to a pizza shop.
Thank God he doesn't like crust.
He threw the box in the garbage can and the investigators assigned to the task force that were following him were able to recover the pizza box, take the pizza crust, get the DNA, and we sent it to a lab over in Pennsylvania.
It came back to initially three of the women on Ocean Parkway.
And listen, we had to go to a special lab because the items were so degraded.
But we were able to, after a time frame, get a match to three, eventually four, and we called them the Gilbo Four.
And then there were another two, Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor, that were also bodies discovered a little bit, about a mile away from the other four.
And then there were some other people that were discovered, Karen Vergara, Sandra Castillo, out in the North Sea.
We were able to match that DNA, or I actually complimented Ray Turney.
