We're so used to seeing what domestic abuse looks like, what homelessness looks like.

And I wanted to get beyond those stereotypes to show that, you know, not all abuse leaves a physical mark.

And like nesting, you know, there's no physical violence as nesting.

There's not a single bruise.

There's not a single drop of blood, you know.

Spoiler there, but there's not.

It's all to do with the psychological, the coercive control, which is really just as difficult to break away from.

But I wanted to show for it to be validating for survivors who have lived through that and to show there is hope that you can reclaim your life.

It's just something I've always been aware of, I think, just as a woman, you know, in the world and aware of these stories and listening to things on the radio and aware of the experiences of people that I know and something that I just felt should be maybe written about more than it is.

And as you said, it's great to see these voices being represented now, I think.

much more than they were even, say, 10 years ago.

And, you know, I think the more that we have these conversations, you know, the better.

And that's why the Radio 2 Book Club and book clubs are absolutely brilliant for this.

You know, books, I think, can allow people a way of talking about topics that can maybe be difficult to broach otherwise.

Through stories, yeah.

I know, like, I'm in a little book club.

It's for fellow single parents like myself.

And we meet up on Zoom.

after the kids bedtime and you know the number of times we'll start talking about a particular book and we'll end up talking then about a more personal topic that we might not actually have raised otherwise you know and it's brilliant and we have great fun as well with it
