The department store had gone down and down and down and down for forty years.
They were sixty.
Like Lazarus.
Like Higbees.
Like
Dayton's and Marshall Field all these ones, but they had gone down to pretty much four.
And, you know, my belief was if if a department's gonna s gonna survive, they gotta recognize the problem is no one wants to shop in big stores anymore.
You know, and uh an item's a click away on the internet.
When the world especially stores had taken over, on and on, the department started to completely reinvent itself.
Well, what I ran into at Pennies was extraordinary skepticism.
So that's the problem internally, I think.
Well, I think there are two things, you know, I was a retail guy who had admired companies like Nordstrom growing up, you know, watching retail.
Yeah.
And I saw service at its best.
But you earn trust every day, one experience at a time.
