And it needs to be said that lawyers are probably doing a poorer job with continuing professional development and competence assurance, though that is changing.

But coming back to the doctors, what people are saying is okay, we don't want to go down the US path of requiring exams, but are there more effective ways that we can be ensuring that people remain competent?

And making sure that we are looking properly when concerns are raised by colleagues or when

error complaints.

But we also need to seek information in ways that we're not currently seeking it.

So that's the feedback from colleagues, the feedback from patients.

We need to incorporate that into our processes.

And we also need to start looking at having online modules that are relevant to my particular subspecialty in medicine that I can go on and take.

And actually if I don't initially pass it, fine, I get some feedback and I can retake it.

How will you know if it's right?

I think we'll know it's right when we start to see a greater public and professional confidence in the system that we've got.

I mean the fact of the matter is that privately, many doctors will still concede that they know of another practitioner to whom on balance they would prefer not to refer a member of their own family.

We need the profession itself to move to a stage where they say, We can see why these checks have been brought into place.

Making more information available, having a more rigorous system in place so that the doctor can put hand on heart and the regulator likewise and say, Yes, we know that any doctor who's registered to practice in Australia and New Zealand is currently good enough to treat patients.
